Lost in City

I stood at a strange intersection, completely lost. I grabbed a passerby and asked anxiously, ‘Excuse me, how do I get to the museum in the old town? ‘ He shook his head and said, ‘I’m not sure. You’d better ask a nearby shop owner. ‘ I walked to a grocery store and asked again, ‘Excuse me, where is the museum? ‘ The owner pointed ahead and said, ‘Turn right at the next intersection, then walk two hundred meters and you’ll be there. ‘

I followed the directions to that intersection, but found it was a dead end. I had to ask a cleaner again, ‘Excuse me, how do I get to the museum? I think I took a wrong turn. ‘ He patiently said, ‘You should have turned left at the second intersection, not right. ‘ I thanked him and finally found the correct path. But the museum gate was closed, and I stood there disappointed.

Just then, an old man came over and asked, ‘Excuse me, what are you looking for? ‘ I said, ‘I’m looking for the museum, but it’s closed. ‘ The old man said, ‘The museum is on another street. You went the wrong way. There’s a small park nearby; if you go through the park, you’ll get there. ‘ I followed his directions to that intersection and indeed saw the museum. I finally breathed a sigh of relief, thinking: When asking for directions, you must ask clearly and not be afraid of trouble.

Asking for Directions in China

In China, it is common to ask for directions from locals, especially shop owners or elderly people who are often familiar with the area.
