Which HSK?

Old HSK old versus New HSK (3.0)

Main differences

– The new system roughly doubles the vocabulary requirements.
Grammar expectations are also much higher.
– Reading and listening materials are more natural and less textbook-like.
– Writing expectations increased significantly.
– The new HSK focuses more on: real-life communication
academic Chinese / professional Chinese
cultural understanding
– The old HSK stopped at HSK 6.
– The new system introduces advanced bands 7–9.
What Bands 7–9 add

These advanced levels include:
– academic writing
– formal presentations
– literature and idioms
– nuanced grammar
– fast native-level listening
– professional and technical Chinese
– debate and argumentation
– classical or semi-classical references

Important note

Although the “new HSK” framework was announced earlier, the global rollout has been gradual. Many schools and textbooks still use the old 6-level structure, while newer materials increasingly reference the 9-band system. On this website we are moving towards the new HSK. (still referencing the old one.)
